Disc 1 - The Story Of Hitler's Infamous Panzer Divisions: Battle tanks decided many battles during WWII. Some 25 000 were produced in Germany and some 250 000 by the Allies during the conflict. Yet despite overwhelming odds the German Panzer Divisions became legendary. The Panzer crews still vividly remember their mechanical mounts the sounds they produced the smell of fuel and oil the effects they had on the enemy and also the fact that the Panzer could become a steel coffin in one blazing moment. Disc 2 - Hitler's Secret Police: The very name of Hitler's secret police has become synonymous with the rule of terror that under Heinrich Himmler first maintained and then extended the Fuhrer's grip on Germany. Waging relentless war on political dissidents disaffected citizens and minorities alike the Gestapo's tactics of torture interrogation and summary execution bolstered Hitler's crumbling regime to the last and established a reputation for brutality and oppression that would endure long after the last Gestapo commandment met his fate at the gallows. Disc 3 - Hitler's War 1939-1945: By 1940 Hitler's dream of mastery in Europe had come true as he triumphantly took Paris after only ten months at war. Encourage by Japan's entry into the war Hitler's hopes lay in a speedy spring offensive but weakened elsewhere by the disastrous Battle of the Atlantic defeats in North Africa the British bombing offensive and certain war with the U.S. his 6th Army was crushed and forced to retreat. Hitler bows to the need to re-arm and in 1943 German teeth are clenched as the struggle begins to re-establish supremacy. By 1944 much ground is lost and the fight is against time as Hitler faces losing the Ukraine. Not even the last desperate deployment of the terrifying flying bombs can turn the tide. Disc 4 - Hitler's Elite Fighting Force: The SS had its beginnings in the Weimar Republic. It became Himmler's personal powerbase and under him they grew into a private army and state-within-the-state. It was a chaotic corrupt and often grossly inefficient organisation. In many of the triumphs of German arms they played a conspicuous role one far disproportionate to their numbers. In the long period of decline and retreat as the Germans were steadily pushed back from east to west their discipline remained unbroken. After the war the Waffen-SS were burned with the near exclusive blame for the most hideous crimes of the Nazi regime. Disc 5 - Great German Battleships Of WWII: This fascinating DVD using archive footage stills and interviews with German ex-Naval officers and seamen concentrates on the exploits of the famous Bismarck. This is followed by an in-depth portrait of the mightiest and most famous German warships of World War Two including the big sea battles they encountered. Disc 6 - The History Of The Luftwaffe: No ordinary force the Luftwaffe was to become the handmaiden of Hitler's dream of conquest and a vital component of 'Blitzkrieg'. However the glories won as the Nazi's marched victorious through Europe were to turn sour....

(Dir. Martin Scorsese 1973) Taxi Driver: 'Taxi Driver' provoked fierce controversy when it was released running into censorship problems in America as some of the scenes of violence were described to be 'as gory as Clockwork Orange and Straw Dogs' (Evening News '76). The children who grew up there shared joyful times but subscribed to a sacred social code-crimes against the neighbourhood were not permitted and when they did occur punishment was severe. Four friends made a mistake that changed their lives forever... (Dir. Barry Levinson 1996)
Filmmaker and composer Thierry De Mey shot the film Rosas danst Rosas in June 1996 at the RITO School in Leuven (Belgium) a building designed by the architect Henry van de Velde. Rosas danst Rosas a choreography for four dancers was created at the Brussels Kaaitheaster Festival in 1983. Four dancers do battle; with each other with the stage and with the public - a fight to the bitter end - set to the minimalistic music of Peter Vermeersch and Thierry De Mey. Meanwhile the performance of Rosas danst Rosas has been staged all over the world and is still part of the repertoire of the dance company. The film is not a straightforward recording of the live performance but a cinematographic interpretation of this 'reference' performance. One camera records the dance itself and a second highlights specific details using close-ups and panning camera movements. The way in which the images are edited five the film an extra rhythmical layer. The various casts which have performed this piece over the years illustrate the evolution of the choreographer's interpretation.

With the Nazi terror on the ascent master filmmaker Max Ophuls fled to Italy in 1934 and made La signora di tutti [Everybody's Lady] - an exuberant desperate melodrama that although arriving early in Ophuls' body of work ranks comfortably alongside Letter from an Unknown Woman The Earrings of Madame de... or Lola Mont''s in the hierarchy of the director's achievements. Isa Miranda one of Italy's greatest stars plays the role of a star (in the part that made her a star) pressed to revisit the entire history of her lovers to the present moment through an inexorable web of flashbacks... brought on by the anaesthetic following a failed suicide attempt. From the record revolving on a turntable in the picture's opening moments Ophuls sets into motion one of those roundelays with fate that he alone could pull off with such eminent elegance. A precursor to the romantic themes that would culminate in Lola Mont''s Ophuls' vertiginous La signora di tutti serves brilliantly as both a critique of one grande dame's own powerful narcissism and an elevation of her glacial femininity to the level of sublime fetish. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present La signora di tutti [Everybody's Lady] the stunningly beautiful '30s masterpiece by famed auteur Max Ophuls (Letter from an Unknown Woman The Reckless Moment La ronde The Earrings of Madame de... Lola Mont''s) starring the legendary Italian actress Isa Miranda.
When Cirque du Soleil first ventured beyond Canada's borders, its powerful, singularly ambitious "reinvention of the circus" seemed quixotic. Inspired by European precedents, this was a big top downsized to a more intimate, single ring, as the French-Canadian troupe jettisoned animals, banished the usual fright-wigged clowns in favour of funny folks versed in (gulp) pantomime, and focused on acrobats, contortionists and illusionists. Conventional wisdom would have held that such esoterica was doomed, but anyone lucky enough to catch that initial Cirque production (or, for that matter, any of its subsequent offerings) knows just how wrong conventional wisdom can be.Cirque's creative brain trust, including "guide" Guy Laliberte and director Franco Dragone, have crafted each production as an extended performance piece framed by recurrent characters, unified production design and underlying themes. Already mesmerising visual tableaux and astonishing illusions are given an added poignancy (and, occasionally, true gravity) by the productions' underlying comments about society, conformity, beauty and emotion; even without such conscious motifs, however, Cirque's sheer artistry is never less than riveting.Quidam revolves around an Everychild, living with self-absorbed (and deliberately archetypal) parents, who is whisked away to a vividly surreal world where Cirque's remarkable acrobats and artists take literal flight. Their tools are often prosaic--oversized flying rings, an open steel wheel large enough for a single inhabitant, skateboards, ropes--yet the resulting images are stunning. Injecting further drama and atmosphere is the score (here by musical director Benoit Jutras), which is as far removed from traditional circus music as Cirque's "acts" are from Barnum & Bailey. Performed with synthesisers, electric guitar, solo reed instruments, percussion and voice (often singing in a kind of Esperanto that's tantalising yet foreign), Cirque's music can be dismissed as New Age only until heard in its intended context. Quidam can't quite achieve the sheer, enveloping wonder that its theatrical source does, but for fans of Cirque du Soleil's unique performance art, this latest presentation sustains the troupe's magic. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com
