The Grand Finale Of British Steam - English Branch Lines and BywaysBranch lines and secondary routes have always had a special appeal. This programme recalls many such English byways in films made in the 1950s and 60s. The railways portrayed ran through landscapes which ranged from the green and pleasant shires of rural England to the very heart of the Metropolis. Among the routes featured are: in the Western Region auto trains on the Gloucester to Chalford service and branch lines to Princetown and Ashburton; in the Midlands the lines from Stamford to Essendine and Seaton are recalled. Steam byways around London include the Stanmore branch the service from Ealing Broadway to Greenford and the West London line. Most of the lines covered in this programme had been closed by the end of the 1960s. Those who knew these lines will have pleasant memories revived by the films and for those who did not get the chance to travel on them in their heyday; this will be a revelation of a lost era. All connoisseurs of minor railways will find this programme a welcome addition to their collection. The Little Book Of The Grand Finale Of British Steam (128 Pages)The year of 1968 was a pivotal year in a period of great change and with the march of so-called 'progress' that included man being a matter of months away from walking on the moon the time was up for steam. The first week of August was to see the closure of the final three depots - effectively drawing to a conclusion the century and a half of loyal service provided by a form of transport to which the wealth of our nation owed so much. The steam era ended so poignantly on 4 August a day on which innumerable steam railwaymen most of whom had dedicated their entire lives to the railways were declared redundant. This fascinating Little Book chronicling the last months of steam on the British Railways main line is a tribute to those final men and machines. Years of painstaking research by Alan Castle who viewed the proceedings at first hand 40 years ago and interviews with drivers firemen and engine shed staff have resulted in this authoritative and definitive account of the year in which the final whistle sounded on a steam era dating back more than 150 years.

This harrowing film was produced in May 1945 at the personal insistence of US General Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was so shocked by what he witnessed with his own eyes at the first concentration camps to be liberated that he ordered that this film should be made as a lasting testament to the barbarism which had occurred under the Nazi regime. This unspeakable footage was usd in evidence at the Nuremberg trials and provides the ultimate primary source which illustrates the inexcusable horrors discovered by the advancing Allied forces. This film contains highly distressing scenes of horrific suffering from the notorious camps at Arnsdat Buchenwald Nordhausen and Dachau among others. The film also features footage of Josef Kramer the Camp Commandant at Belsen dubbed The Beast of Belsen by camp inmates. Kramer was a notorious Nazi war criminal who was known to have been personally responsible for the deaths of thousands of inmates. He was convicted of war crimes and hanged in Hamelin prison after World War II. This was the film which helped to secure the verdict which convicted Josef Kramer and dozens like him.

  • Battle 360 [Blu-ray]Battle 360 | Blu Ray | (27/09/2010) from £13.48   |  Saving you £11.51 (46.10%)   |  RRP £24.99

It would be an understatement say that Battle 360: Season 1 has substantial appeal for World War II and naval history "enthusiasts." Considering the depth and thoroughness of the program and the sheer volume of data and information on hand, it’s likely that experts, fanatics, and obsessives will be well satisfied too. Using a combination of extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI), charts, graphics, statistics, file footage, photos, interviews with military men both past and present, and more, the program focuses on the Pacific Theater, where the United States and its allies battled Japan for the three and half years between Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and the end of the war in August 1945. At the center of virtually every battle during that span was the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. Launched in 1936, this Yorktown class vessel, also known as "a fighting city of steel" and "the Lucky E" (for its ability to avoid major catastrophe, at least for the most part), carried 96 planes, a huge amount of weaponry, and a crew whose average was an astonishing 19 years old. Proceeding chronologically, the series details such major conflicts as Midway (when the U.S. disabled no less than four Japanese carriers), Guadalcanal (when the Enterprise suffered serious damage while helping to thwart the enemy’s plans to invade Australia), and Leyte Gulf ("the largest naval battle in the history of mankind"), finishing with the Japanese’s last-gasp use of kamikaze pilots to attack the U.S. fleet. Much of this is genuinely gripping, as the episodes provide literally minute-by-minute accounts of every encounter and the size, speed, function, and firepower of every vessel and aircraft on both sides. But there are notable drawbacks as well, starting with the fact that for all of its detail, we see almost nothing of the Enterprise’s interior or descriptions of daily life on board the enormous vessel. There’s also the issue of how much CGI you can take; although there is some film footage (which may or may not be from the specific skirmish being described), the computer work, while generally pretty convincing, is pervasive and rather like a video game without a controller. What’s more, each episode is kinetic almost to distraction, with a ceaseless flow of pounding music and sound effects, flashing graphics, and macho voice-over detailing the action. On the other hand, the reminiscences of those who were actually there are often very moving, not to mention a welcome surcease from the high-tech assault of the rest of the show.--Sam Graham
