The Iraqi town of Fallujah, once one of the most peaceful areas of the country had grown increasingly violent since the fall of Saddam Hussain in 2003. On 2 April 2003 a crowd of 200 people defied a curfew and gathered outside a local school to protest against the presence of foreign forces in the city. The protest escalated as gunmen amongst the protesting crowd reportedly fired upon US troops and US Army soldiers returned fire, killing 17 people and wounding more than 70 of the protesters. Tensions between US forces and local residents then reached boiling point, when on 31 March 2004 four Americans were ambushed and killed in the city and images of their mutilated bodies were broadcast around the world. The U.S. government was outraged and ordered a full assault on the city. On 2 April, 'Operation Vigilant Resolve' was launched and the mission for Marines to capture ill insurgents in and around Fallujah, not just those responsible for the Blackwater killings, was put into action! This dramatic programme tells the incredible story of the insurgent attack on the four private contractors and the subsequent military operations to gain control of the city. Fallujah was an intense, bloody, personal battle for those that fought it. Just as Somalia (Blackhawk Down) defined a generation of Army Rangers, Fallujah created a special breed of Marine for the 21st Century, one schooled in intense, hand-to-hand combat and urban warfare unlike anything that has engaged the US military since Vietnam.
On January 31, 1968, the North Vietnamese Army launches the surprise Tet Offensive, simultaneously attacking dozens of South Vietnamese cities. Among them is the ancient city of Hue. A very small contingent of US Marines and South Vietnamese Army troops defend the city and they are quickly surrounded and badly outnumbered 10 to 1. At first the Marines have no idea as to the extent of the attack and do not know that nearly all the city has fallen under Communist control. As they begin their counter-attacks, they meet stiff and determined resistance. Even as reinforcements arrive, narrowing the odds to 4 to1, the Marines are continually pinned down by dangerous machine gun nests and hidden North Vietnamese troops. The Marines had to attack the communists block by block, building by building, to drive them out. As the battle unfolds, strategic objectives change by the day. It becomes clear that they will have to drive the North Vietnamese out of the South side of Hue before they can regain control of the city.

Concorde was an extraordinary technological achievement born out of an era when supersonic travel captivated imaginations. But its path from drawing board to flight was fraught with difficulty, every aspect of Concorde’s design and construction pushed back the frontiers of technology: its aerodynamics, engines, even construction methods. It was also an extraordinary achievement in international cooperation, setting new production standards and methods for generations to come. This programme presents a unique insight into the development of Concorde, going behind the scenes at the many sites in France and Britain. The programme also features rare archive of the experimental aircraft built to test many of the technologies that went into Concorde. Of special interest are interviews recorded with the late Brian Trubshaw and Andre Turcat, chief test pilots for the Concorde programme in Britain and France respectively. The programme is brought right up to date with the tragic crash in Paris, the triumphal return to flight and the memorable images of Concorde’s last return to London’s Heathrow airport.

During the twentieth century, the days of horse-drawn logistics and cavalry charges gradually became a thing of the past, and the age of military vehicles began. This book charts the development of military vehicles from steam powered tractors to modern main battle tanks. The story reveals how such vehicles have changed the way wars are fought, either by increasing the speed and volume of logistics or troop deployments, or through the application of mobile firepower. The narrative explains key technical innovations from World War I, through the inter-war years to World War II, the Cold War and beyond. It pays homage to outstanding designs and those that are remembered with fondness, including the M3 Lee/Grant, T-34, Panther, Tiger, M1 Abrams, Chieftain and M4 Sherman tanks; the Bren Gun Carrier, the Willys ‘Jeep’, the Dodge truck; through to the modern ‘Humvee’ and Stryker, and many more. Chris McNab examines why they were invented, how they developed, their use in action, their strengths and weaknesses, and what it was like to be in the driving seat. This fascinating narrative is a highly readable guide to these much-loved classic vehicles, perfect for any enthusiast.
