The impeccably orchestrated handover was the result of four years intense training for the soldiers under the command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Each soldier endured months of early morning marching drills gruelling physical training and much-dreaded self-criticism sessions to become a defender of the reclaimed land. Through the eyes of two young recruits (Han Qiang - 19 and Xu Zhao - 20) we gain a truly unique insight into a garrison which remains surprisingly different from those of the modern western world. The never-before-seen images reveal the recruit's pride and heartache at being isolated from the outside world and what it takes to be a member of Hong Kong's elite defence force.
