The astonishing life of a man who changed the world. Sometimes dismissed in legend as the mad monk who spoke to the birds, Francis' appeal is as strong as ever.It is an amazing story: how a 12th century friar from a relatively unknown part of Europe, who during his life-time liked to be known as 'Il Poverello' - the little poor man - has reached international and historic prominence 800 years later. The most tender and non-violent of men, to many Francis is perhaps the only genuine successor to Jesus Christ that Christianity has so far produced. But there was much more to him than mere pastoral simplicity: he was an unusual and attractive mixture of paragon and show-off, warrior and peace-maker, non-conformist and staunch son of the Church. This classic programme was filmed in 1982 on location in the ancient settings of Assisi, Rome, and Canterbury, the film tells the story of St. Francis, his life and his work and includes dramatic scenes from the colourful Calendimaggio Festival in Assisi.Narrated by Robert Lang and written & produced by Peter Batty for Channel 4.

Portrait of Ireland, which has no narrative or documentary stylings of any sort, is like a slide show with a soundtrack. Postcard images of sunsets, sunrises, pasture, bog, grazing sheep, old men drinking stout in pubs, pudgy Irish women standing picturesquely in doorways of thatch-roofed cottages, ancient cairns, castles, heather-blanketed cliffs, crashing waves and serene beaches fade one into another, while the mystic compositions of Enya, James Galway, and the Chieftains provide an aural Celtic accessory. Although not inaccurate in their stereotypes, the images nonetheless give no insights into the island that are not already well conceived. --Beth Massa
