No such series had as long a run or was as well received by the viewers as the U.S. Army's Big Picture series. From 1951 to 1964 in syndication or on the ABC television network these programs presented straight documentary films produced by the Army Pictorial Center. These productions depicted various facets of the U.S. Army in action including great battles new weaponry training and equipment and the historical roles played by the Army's various divisions and branches. Most of the footage used in this interesting series came from the Army's own vast authentic and re-enactment training film library. Here is what turned out to be a series of very successful public relations programs the official U.S. Army television report to the nation the Big Picture. Episodes Comprise: 1. 6th Infantry Division: The 6th Infantry Division of World War II holds the unchallenged record for consecutive days of continuous combat in the Pacific Theater 219 days. 2. 1st Cavalry & 41st Division: The 1st Cavalry has seen action from Bull Run to Baghdad but during WWII the first team played a pivotal role in retaking the Philippines. 3. Airborne To Battle: Air mobility has been a key concept since World War II and in Korea and afterwards the concept of vertical envelopment continued to evolve and grow in importance. 4. King Of Battle: - Field artillery is a category of mobile weapons used to support armies in the field known as the King of Battle. 5. Tigers On The Loose: The 10th Armored Division nicknamed the Tiger Division served under General George S. Patton in World War II. Should God forbid France fall we will need every available aircraft and every trained pilot to defend the shores of Britain from the invasion force which most surely will come. These words written by Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding to Prime Minister Winston Churchill in May 1940 could not have been more true. There remained twenty miles or so of water between Hitler and Great Britain. Unless Hitler's Air Force had control of the skies between France and England any attempt to send an invasion force across that narrow strip of water would be disastrous. The stage was therefore set for an epic battle to control the skies over the English Channel and Southern England. Although aircraft production had been sufficiently increased fighter pilots took up to eighteen months to train. It was here that the RAF were in desperate need; and unless Britain's pilots could shoot down Luftwaffe aircraft at a rate of nearly four to one the RAF would be shot from the skies within weeks and Europe would become a secure fortress for the Third Reich. The defence of Britain and ultimately the free world therefore lay on the shoulders of a few hundred RAF pilots whose mission was to hold out at any cost... this remarkable new DVD tells the story of some of those pilots.

Some planes you see on the runaway and you just do not believe that they will ever get off the ground. But they do and here you can discover how. The Antonov 124 is a giant among giants. On it's maiden fight in December 1982 it was the largest powered craft to fly. The Antonov is still the world's largest heavy lift aircraft. Surprisingly the largest aircraft ever built would dwarf the 124 Antonov. Airships took to the skies around 1900 when the aeroplane was a very basic contraption nonetheless we end with a look at a plane that was designed with the sole purpose of moving people and making air travel affordable to the masses. Seventy-five thousand engineering drawings were used to produce the first 747. Half a century after this aircraft first flew it is still in production. It has been hailed by some aviation enthusiasts as one of the most outstanding aircraft to take to the skies. Surprisingly in this age of jets this most capable aircraft is propeller driven. Notone part of this latest version is from the original model. The C-130's name is Hercules and the word relates to the mythical Greek hero who was renowned for his great strength. Like Hercules the myth the C130 has become a legend in aviation.
