Kon Ichikawa directs this adaptation of the Japanese tale about the revenge of the 47 Ronin. The term 'ronin' means leaderless and was applied to the 47 warriors in question following the forced suicide of their master. With the underhand machinations of a rival lord blamed for his death, the remaining ronin, inspired by the moralistic example of Oishi Kuranosuke (Ken Takakura), plan their revenge. Of course, with Bushido, the honour code of the samurai, decreeing that murder is a crime, the men will have to be prepared to take their own lives if they can successfully avenge their lost figurehead...
