1980s crime thriller starring Jeff Bridges as an alcoholic ex-police officer who gets dragged into the LA underworld. Scudder (Bridges) begins the film as a narcotics cop, but his part in a fatal shooting during a drugs bust drives his alcohol abuse over the edge and he soon finds himself without a job and estranged from his family. His entry to the underworld comes via a prostitute, Sunny (Alexandra Paul), who begs him for protection. When Scudder fails and Sunny is discovered dead, the ex-cop sets out to track down her killer. Journeying deeper into an underworld populated by such figures as the drug baron, Angel (Andy Garcia), and Sunny's beautiful friend, Sarah (Rosanna Arquette), Scudder must trust his old instincts and fight the need for drink if he is to prevail.
