Hugh Grant stars in this adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel about a feckless, wealthy, single 30-something who invents an imaginary son as a way of meeting available single parents, and consequently develops a friendship with a troubled 12 year old boy.
"About a Boy" a comedy-drama based on the Nick Hornby novel sees Hugh Grant doing what he does best, playing a commitment phobic male and self-professed Island; not quite however to the extent of the Daniel Cleaver caricature that we see in "Bridget Jones Diary."
"Will" a thirty something bachelor attends single parent meetings in order to meet women that he believes will not want a commitment from him. He gets more than he bargained for however when a date with a single mother leads to the chance meeting of a boy "Marcus"; a loner with an oddball mother played by Toni Collette ["Muriel"s Wedding" & "Sixth Sense"]. "Marcus" then proceeds to thrust himself into "Will"s" life, challenging the fundaments of "Will"s" philosophy.
What follows is a progressive change in "Will" that builds up throughout the film ultimately to self-realisation.
"About a Boy" offers some real humour and cringe-worthy moments that both warm your heart and make you reel with laughter. It has a realistic approach to the predicaments of modern life without moralizing or offering a solution, and is well worth 90 minutes out of anyone"s time.

Hugh Grant takes the lead role as aimless, commitment-shy, thirtysomething Will in this adaptation of Nick Hornby's bestseller. Living on the royalties of a hit song his father wrote 40 years ago, Will drifts through life, moving from one relationship to the next with little lasting effect. But when he hits upon the new idea of dating single-mothers, he soon finds himself entangled with the suicidal Fiona (Toni Colette) and her 12-year-old-son Marcus (Nicholas Hoult). As he and Marcus gradually develop a friendship, Will begins to reassess the selfish life he has been living.
