On the face of it, the Ferris family have it all. Father Jim (Danny Huston) has made his fortune in packaging, and lives in a large house with his wife Alice (Jennifer Ehle), his son Jack (Mark Wells) and daughter Elyssa (Amelia Warner). But Jim's premature death turns the family upside down; the children are unable to cope with their loss and things are made worse when their mother Alice meets a local widower. Alice finds her son becoming hostile towards her, and a firm wedge is driven between Jack and the rest of the family. It is another 11 years before the rift can even begin to heal as they all come together again for Jack's 21st birthday weekend.
