Jane Goodale (Ashley Judd) is a talent scout for a TV talk show in New York City. Stung by a relationship with new producer Ray Alden (Greg Kinnear) - who leads her on but has a change of heart just as they are about to move in together - she gets an apartment with the womanising Eddie Alden (Hugh Jackman) and begins researching the male animal's mating habits. When Jane's findings are then published in a men's magazine, they quickly become a national talking point; but despite becoming a love guru to half the country, Jane still has to resolve her own romantic problems and decide how she really feels about the men in her life - ex-lover Ray and flatmate Eddie.
