Drama which relates the real life tale of a community of German farmers who helped shelter a Jewish family during the dark days of World War II. Based on the memoirs of Marga Spiegel, the film brings to life the experience of Marga (Veronica Ferres), her husband, Siegmund (Armin Rohde), and their young daughter, Karin (Luisa Mix), while they lived out of sight in Munsterland, a region in the north of Germany. As German Jews, the family would undoubtedly have been sent to the concentration camps which took millions of lives during the Holocaust had the farmers not offered them succour. Nonetheless, the farmers appear to have sheltered the Spiegels without any conscious awareness of their heroism. The film explores the difficulties faced by both the Spiegels and those who gave them shelter, and the bond of trust and respect which bound the two parties together.
