The Battle of the Somme is a 1916 British documentary and propaganda film commissioned by Lloyd George. Shot by two official cinematographers Geoffrey Malins and John McDowell the film depicts the British Army's preparations for and the early stages of the battle of the Somme. Since then debate has raged over the only combat footage of the battle. Is the footage real or is it propaganda? For the first time a team of First World War investigators is trying to do what no one has ever done - use forensic science to solve a 100-year-old mystery trapped on film.
