Beasts of the Southern Wild is a powerful 2012 fantasy drama directed by Benh Zeitlin and starring Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry and Levy Easterly. It is an unusual, highly complex film telling the story of a six year old girl (Hushpuppy) on the verge of being orphaned due to her father's fading health. Beasts is all about the frail relationship between a young girl and her father (Wink - a drunkard), their shared loss, their community, their desperate fight for survival and the need to confront all types of metaphorical Beasts.
Left to her own devices... in her ramshackle home in a forgotten, incredibly remote and isolated Louisiana bayou community called The Bathtub, Hushpuppy lives with the terror of her father's imminent death hanging over her. Already having to come to terms with missing her mother (who has disappeared - presumed dead) and having to deal with the harsh natural environment of the bayou and the squalid poverty of home, she courageously sets about fending for herself believing that the universe exists in well-balanced equilibrium where everything in the natural world fits together seamlessly and in complete harmony.
This unfortunately is not the case and when nature inevitably goes haywire during a wild raging storm (which comes every 100 years), the temperature rises and the ice caps melt releasing hordes of prehistoric Aurochs which unleash themselves on the unsuspecting inhabitants. Benh Zeitlin co-writes and directs this Academy Award-nominated fantasy drama about a six-year-old girl struggling to survive in the flooded bayous of Louisiana. Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) and her father Wink (Dwight Henry) live in 'the Bathtub', a poverty-stricken, semi-feral swamp area outside the protection of the New Orleans levee system. She sees herself as a 'little piece of a big, big universe' inhabiting a semi-magical world where everything is part of an interrelated, organic whole. With an absent mother, and her father sick, Hushpuppy's tenacious character and survival instincts are soon tested to the limits, when the onset of a colossal storm threatens to obliterate the unprotected community. With the waters rising, and determined to save the world she loves, Hushpuppy and her father take to the water in a makeshift boat fashioned from the back of an old pickup truck, in one last desperate effort to survive.
