The French Alps provides the setting for this enduring French thirteen part serial in which the friendship between Sebastien an eight-year-old boy and Belle a huge Pyrenees dog causes astonishment and spitefulness among the people of a frontier village near the Italian border. This black and white dubbed-English series was first broadcast on the BBC in 1967. Episode titles: 1. The Meeting 2. The Refuge Hut 3. The Hunt 4. The Stranger 5. Norbert's Suitcase 6. The Customs
A children's programme from the late 60s, in black and white and dubbed from French into an English/French mid-Channel accent that is at times laughable!
Why rate it excellent then?
The naive charm of this series remained stuck in my wife and my own memory from that time to today. As it was so well priced I decided to surprise her and gave it at Christmas. We were not disappointed in the simple story of a boy's love for his dog. The two are inseparable except when a stranger appears in the mountain village, and comes between them. The plot is simple but, as I say, charming, and amazingly still holds our interest today. It's a simple story of love, danger, loyalty and treachery and is timeless.
The stunning scenery of the French/Italian Alps is the backdrop and the characters well rounded, considering the age of the programme. We even caught ourselves humming the theme tune (which, again, had stuck in our memories). As we watched each episode (13 in total) we were looking forward to getting the washing up done and sitting down together!
Oh and our 25 year daughter got hooked as we starting watching it, and our 'cool' son of 19 sat entranced too! Don't tell him this is an 'old' series and in 'black and white' and dubbed - we'll keep it our secret!
