Sethe (Oprah Winfrey) is a former slave living in Ohio in 1873, in a house passed down from her mother-in-law. Her life is disturbed by the arrival of Paul D (Danny Glover), an old friend from her past, when he moves in with her; and seems to banish the gloom and ghosts which have haunted her for so long. When a beautiful young girl called Beloved (Thandie Newton) arrives in town, Sethe takes an instant shine to her, and invites her to join them. But Beloved has many secrets from the past, secrets that relate to Sethe and the past which she has tried so hard to forget.
