Starring Catherine Deneuve and (her real-life daughter) Chiara Mastroianni, this sly and exquisitely romantic musical drama from Christophe Honor (Love Songs, Dans Paris) spans over three decades as it follows a mother and daughter's misadventures in love. In the 60s, Madeleine (Ludivine Sagnier) leaves Paris to re-join her Czech husband Jaromil (Rasha Bukvic) in Prague, but his infidelities and the arrival of Russian tanks in the city lead her back to France.Thirty years later we follow the romance of Madeleine's daughter, Vera, who falls in love with a musician (Paul... Scneider) in London who is incapable of devoting himself to her. Meanwhile in Paris, a re-married Madeleine (Deneuve) has rekindled her love affair with Jaromil (Milos Forman). Louis Garrel and Paul Schneider also star in this light-hearted but ultimately moving exploration of the changing nature of relationships, with music by Alex Beaupain (Love Songs). An elegy to femininity and passion with musical outbursts. French-language musical from director Christophe Honoré that follows 40 years in the life of a woman who comes to maturity amidst the political and social turmoil of the 1960s. Ludivine Sagnier plays the young Madeleine, a 1960s shoe store salesgirl who falls in love with a Czech doctor, Jaromil (Radivoje Bukvic). The pair get married and have a child together, but the relationship fails to outlast the decade and Madeleine soon remarries. However, the older Madeleine (played by Catherine Deneuve), is unable to deny that she remains in love with Jaromil. Even worse, the couple's daughter, Véra (Chiara Mastroianni), appears set to repeat the mistakes of her mother by falling hopelessly in love with an unsuitable man...
A mother and daughter follow similar paths with different results in this drama from writer and director Christophe Honore. In 1964, Madeleine (Ludivine Sagnier) is a restless young woman working at a shoe store who, after helping herself to a new pair of high heels, is mistaken for a streetwalker by a man passing by. Madeleine impulsively decides to go along with the stranger's assumptions, and is soon making her living as a high class prostitute. One of her regular customers is a handsome doctor named Jaromil (Rasha Bukvic), and when he asks for her hand in marriage, she accepts. They settle in his native Czechoslovakia and have a daughter, Vera. Years later, Vera (Chiara Mastroianni) looks back on the story of her mother and father (played in their later years by Catherine Deneuve and Milos Forman) with an viewpoint colored by both romanticism and regret; while Madeleine's life as a streetwalker was full of adventure and brought her love, Vera has grown up in an era where AIDS has made prostitution a bit like Russian Roulette, and she's unable to commit to a relationship, tossing aside her on-and-off boyfriend Clement (Louis Garrel) in favor of obsessing over Henderson (Paul Schneider), a musician who prefers the company of men. Les Bien-aimes (aka Beloved) was an official selection at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.
