Award winning film Biutiful was directed by Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and is his most successful work to date. The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year and Best Actor (for Javier Bardem) at the Oscars and the BAFTAS 2011, and won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival amongst numerous other nominations and wins.
The film is in Spanish with English subtitles and is set in Barcelona. Javier Bardem plays Uxbal, an extremely shady character who is a sleazy hustler for illegal Immigrant workers and drug dealers. Already... burdened with complicated business and personal relationship problems, he finds out he has terminal prostate cancer and has been given only a few months left to live.
To make matters even worse he is afflicted with the dubious talent of being able to talk to the dead. He is also plagued with guilt due to his wrongdoings and is overwhelmed with pain from the cancer. However he is a loving father to his two children and tries to give support to his bipolar, alcoholic, ex-wife who is also recovering from heroin addiction. While contemplating the depravity of his past life he is overtly tortured by the dread of what will become of his precious family when he is gone. In a sense he feels he will reap what he has sown.
As the miserable plight of this unfortunate scoundrel unfolds, we are treated to an oppressively grim though powerfully dramatic insight into the nature of the Human Condition.
