Set in northern Italy in the early 18th Century, Stan and Ollie star as wannabe bandits Stanilo and Olio who holdup the wrong man on their first job. Their victim is none other than the infamous highwayman Fra Diavolo also known as the Marquis de San Marco, a nobleman who uses his social position to steal from his fellow gentry. They find new employment as Fra Diavolo’s servants and soon become embroiled in a dastardly scheme to steal 500,000 francs. But no matter how good the plan is, with Stanilo and Olio around nothing is ever as easy as it should be.

Olio (Oliver Hardy) and Stanlio (Stan Laurel) are the servants of Fra Diavoli, a bandit who is in reality the Marquis de San Marco. As the Marquis he discovers the whereabouts of high society ladies' jewellery, only to steal the valuables in his bandit guise.
