Britain's Century Of War DVD

| DVD

Disc 1 - The Boer War: When Britain went to war against the Boers in October 1899 the British public expected the fighting to be over by Christmas. As it turned out The Boer War in Kipling's famous phrase gave the British 'no end of a lesson'. Using accounts of the soldiers who fought in this bitter and bloody clash of arms and remarkable contemporary photographs this programme tells the story of Britain's last great Imperial War. Disc 2 - The Great War: This documentary on World War One combines a riveting storyline with much newly gathered information and devastating... pictures of the eerie landscape of war on the grandest scale. It makes for a compelling exploration of war at its most horrific. Disc 3 - The History of World War II: Britain's response to Germany's Blitzkrieg invasion of Poland in 1939 was the British Expeditionary Force sent to Europe to stop the Germans following their successful airborne invasion of the Low Countries with an armoured assault against France. The BEF'S enforced heroic withdrawal at Dunkirk left the Royal Air Force under Sir Hugh Dowding to win the Battle of Britain and postpone Nazi invasion plans indefinitely. The rapid fall of the Metazoans Line to German assault despite British reinforcement from Africa saw Hitler turn his attention from Greece to Russia. Meanwhile Hitler's Barbarossa attack on the Soviet Union provided suicidal: German surrender at Stalingrad was followed by Kursk the biggest ever tank battle. In the Far East Japan followed their pre-emptive strike at Pearl Harbour with rapid territorial gains before being pushed back from Midway by American naval might. In Europe RAF Bomber Command directed by Arthur Harris blitzed German cities as the D-Day invasion of Normandy - Eisenhower's Operation Overload - was taking shape... Disc 4 - The Six Day War 1967: The story of the Arab-Israeli War of 1967. In May of that year Egypt under President Nasser blocked the Tiran Straits to Israeli shipping and began to gather huge numbers of troops in the Sinai Peninsula. At the same time King Hussein's Jordan allowed Iraqi troops across her border. Israel was swift to respond to this turn of events and there was a devastating pre-emptive air strike against the Egyptian airforce. Jordanian and Syrian attacks were halted and repelled; after only six short days Israel had captured East Jerusalem the Golan Heights the West Bank and Sinai itself. Disc 5 - The Falklands War: This 20th anniversary commemorative programme is a powerful record of a war that cost more than a thousand lives. It features remarkable archive footage of the fight for the Faukland Islands atmospheric battle reconstructions and 3D animated graphics that provide a unique perspective on famous battles such as Goose Green Tumbledown Mountain and Wireless Ridge. Disc 6 - The Gulf War: On August 3rd 1990 Iraq under its ferocious dictator Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait its oil-rich neighbour. Not long out of a war with Iran Iraq badly under-estimated the reaction of the watching world to its unprovoked attack. [show more]
