Using rare Movietone archive footage and material captured on film by front line cameramen, this documentary chronicles Britain's Second World War campaign in Italy. Churchill predicted that the country would fall swiftly, and the initial assault in 1943 looked set to prove him correct; the islands of Pantelleria and Lampedusa were soon captured, and Sicily fell soon after. However, despite the surrender of the Italians, the occupying German troops decided to fight on, resulting in a two year war of attrition which tested the mettle of the British forces to the limit.
