Christmas in 1950s Poplar is proving to be an extremely busy time for the midwives from Nonnatus House. Nurse Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) becomes personally involved in the mysteriously troubled life of Mrs Jenkins, a local elderly vagrant woman, who is still deeply suffering from the loss of her children who were sent to the workhouse years before. The team find an abandoned baby on the steps of the convent and all set about looking after him at the same time as trying to trace his mother. Chummy (Miranda Hart), meanwhile, Akela to a group of rather boisterous local... cub scouts, decides to produce a totally unforgettable version of the Nativity which requires considerable organisation and some last minute costume design.
This Christmas Special provides a heart-warming addition to this affectionately nostalgic trip back to 1950s London (East End). The storylines which are very realistic are often quite moving and include some humour and some gritty, tear jerking incidents.
