'CELTIC - THE IRISH CONNECTION' begins with the Great Irish famine of 1845-51. In the space of only a few short years, the Famine killed one million people in Ireland and a million more emigrated as refugees. 100,000 of these displaced Irish escaped to a new life in Scotland, mainly to the Glasgow and Lanarkshire areas of the west. For several decades following the Famine, these refugees were joined by thousands more Irish fleeing to Scotland for work and survival.
