Tim Burton and Johnny Depp team up to bring Roald Dahl's classic childrens book to the big screen.
another beautiful creation by tim burton! From the minute alice appears on screen to the rolling of credits at the end I stared at the screen in wonder!! The new adventures of alice in wonderland is the best movie I have seen in 2010! Tim burtons fabulous imagination yet again creates a wonderland far removed from anything we have ever seen before - each character has been so thoughfully moulded and perfectly acted, each costume so fitting for the personality of the wearer and not a single action out of character! Jonny depp of course plays the role of the mad hatter to absolute perfection - evoking many emotions in the watcher and creating a new depth to the already loved book character! what a fabulous film! especially in 3d! - everyone must buy it on DVD!!!
I loved the first Wonka, and I knew that this will be difficult to make better than the original. Johnny Depp was rubbish as Wonka and so was everyone else. Please, nobody make another.
Depp has the difficult position of creating a new Mr.Wonka which Gene Wilder made his own. The film is original and it is unfair to compare it to the original as the re make will still entertain and delight film watchers.
The story starts by introducing charlie who lives in a small house with his parents and grandparents. One grandparent who used to be in Vicar of Dibley (the one who use to give marmite cake and other weirdly flavoured sandwiches). Charlie's life was going smoothly but though he seemed happy about it wasn't that happy. Then luck came his way when he found a £10 note on the ground and he spends it on a Willy Wonka's chocolate bar where he finds one of the five golden tickets Wonka put in his worldwide known chocolate. The press and the winners family see them after the little performance from Willy Wonka's wooden figures which in the end get set on fire by the fireworks into the chocolate factory. The five winners get's smaller after one of them gets too distracted by their wildest dream. Augustus Gloop, the fat one starts drinking the chocolate river, Violet who eats an 'every meal in a day' flavoured bubblegum which turns her blue, Veruca Salt who gets attacked by well trained squirrels and Mike the TV and Game Addict who becomes the first human to be tested on Willy Wonka's special machine that turns a big bar of chocolate into a small bar.
Four of the Golden Ticket winners have somehow disapeared out of the running for the mysterious prize that Willy Wonka promised them at the end of the tour.
Charlie finds himself the winner of this. Which was ownership of 'Willy Wonka's chocolate factory' but Charlie doesnt want it because Willy Wonka tells him that he has to give up his family.
I heard many good reviews about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but I also heard many bad ones, so I decided to check the film out for myself. The first thing that one automatically assumes about this film is that it's a 'modern' version of the Gene Wilder classic musical film of the 70s. However, that isn't the case at all. This version is much darker and, much to the delight of myself and many other Roald Dahl fans out there, is much more in line with the book, and yet the film still manages to add extras surprises to those
Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka is perfectly cast and steals the spotlight away from any of the other actors. From the moment you see him, you instantly know that Depp is creating his own character, and you often feel as though he's holding something back for later on in the film, and yet you're never disappointed with the performance he gives.
The introduction of Willy Wonka's childhood, more specifically his father (played by Christopher Lee) was a curveball no-one really expected, but it's one that's delivered well. It gives Willy Wonka a sense of mortality, as many assume Willy Wonka to be almost 'God-like' in his chocolateer knowledge; it's refreshing to see Lee giving his all for a children's motion picture and showing us just why he's one of the best.
The effects are spectacular, and Tim Burton has put a lot of thought into making us believe that chocolates and sweets, such as the 'Everlasting Gobstopper', the infamous choclate river and the actual choclate bars themselves, which started in the mind of a children's writer, actually exist in our everyday life.
The reason I haven't rated this film as 4 out of 4 is for a coupel of reasons. The first is the Oompa Lumpas...or should I say 'Oompa Lumpa'. They have cloned one actor to play all the Oompa Lumpas, and it's obvious that you can 'see the joins' in the editing when copying the same actor numerous amounts of times. However, I can't fault the devotion Tim Burton has made to the book. The only times the Oompa Lumpas speak, the text is taken straight from the book, and it's fashioned into a variety of genres of music, including heavy rock.
To summarise, this film is a must have. The extra features on the DVD will keep you entertained. There is a set of mini games, as well the option of seeing the effects of making your own Wonka's choclate. Great fun! You won't be disappointed by this DVD
I throuht Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was great.Johnny Depp was great as Willy Wonka. This version told a better story and a proper ending.
Wonderful to see a classic film re-made and not comparable with the original! Fabulous effects, Jonny Depp is outstanding as the child-like and very strange Willy Wonka. The children are well presented in their roles. I couldn't leave my seat until the film was over.........
It was always going to be difficult recreating the Roald Dahl novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", especially when there is a much loved film starring Gene Wilder.
However Tim Burton manages to bring a fresh and colourful adaptation that children and adults alike can appreciate.
The film explores Wonka's past and creates a 3D character that arouses some emotion towards the factory owner. Johnny Depp is superb as the slightly crazy man with a sweet tooth providing the character with a strange innocence.
Burton provides a magical and zany world in the factory that makes the eye appreciate every scene.
The oompa Loompas provide much humour and songs througout the film which will have you in hysterics.
This is not just a remake of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". It is a fresh and exiting adaptation that will have children and adults alike wanting more.
This is a fabulous dark and almost sinister version of the Gene Wilder classic - and I loved it. The characters of Charlie and his family and, indeed, the other four ticket winners, were very much secondary to Willy Wonka, portrayed to perfection by Johnny Depp. I can see why reports that he based the character on Michael Jackson exist - the character has lost himself in childhood in many ways, possibly much in the way that MIchael Jackson built his home around a fairground and surrounded himself with children, Willy Wonka built his life around his chocolate factory and surrounded himself with Oopma Loompas. The Ooopma Loompas were in my opinion the biggest disappointment in the film. The 'cloning' of the Ooompa Loompas didn't work for me, it would have been preferable to have characters and personalities shine from every individual, to my mind. I also think the rhyme that Gene Wilder recites as they carreer down the catacomb-esque tunnels on the chocolate river would have been very fitting - but probably impossible to use due to copyright laws. But those were two minor flaws in what was for me the best 'childrens' movie I have seen in a long, long time.

Family adventure based on the novel by Roald Dahl. The film centres around an eccentric chocolatier, Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp), and Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), a good-hearted boy from a poor family who lives in the shadow of Wonka's extraordinary factory. Most nights in the Bucket home, dinner is a watered-down bowl of cabbage soup, which young Charlie gladly shares with his mother (Helena Bonham Carter) and father (Noah Taylor) and both pairs of grandparents. They all live in a tiny, tumbledown, drafty old house but it is filled with love. Every night, the last thing Charlie sees from his window is the great factory, and he drifts off to sleep dreaming about what might be inside. For nearly fifteen years, no one has seen a single worker going in or coming out of the factory, or caught a glimpse of Willy Wonka himself, yet, mysteriously, great quantities of chocolate are still being made and shipped to shops all over the world. One day Willy Wonka makes a momentous announcement. He will open his famous factory and reveal 'all of its secrets and magic' to five lucky children who find golden tickets hidden inside five randomly selected Wonka chocolate bars. When Charlie finds some money on the snowy street and takes it to the nearest store for a Wonka Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight he finds a golden ticket. The family decides that Grandpa Joe (David Kelly) should be the one to accompany Charlie on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Once inside, Charlie is dazzled by one amazing sight after another.
