Connie - The Complete Series DVD

| DVD

Stephanie Beacham takes the title role in a drama of intrigue set in the cut-throat world of the rag trade. Her performance as a feisty fashion entrepreneur led directly to her phenomenal success in The Colbys and Dynasty, and dominates a series bristling with razor-sharp humour and boasting a plot full of surprises. Also starring Pam Ferris, George Costigan and Brenda Bruce, Connie was originally screened in 1985, and features a theme song co-written by the Oscar-nominated Willy Russell (Blood Brothers, Educating Rita). Eight years ago, Connie 'retired' to Greece... to run a taverna with a local Adonis. Now, her return to her native East Midlands and the industry she loves sends ripples of fear through the dingy offices of her former rivals; they all guess, correctly, that she wants a slice of the action. But who will give her the all-important toehold? Her family and friends are no help and what nobody knows is that although Connie came back on a first-class ticket, she got off the plane wearing a simple cotton dress, nursing a bandaged hand and clutching a handbag containing nothing but tissues, a lipstick and ten drachma. The people who cheated on her, in or out of bed, had better watch out! [show more]

All 13 episodes of the 1980s British drama starring Stephanie Beacham as a driven businesswoman returning home to rebuild a fashion business. Connie (Beacham) owned a successful fashion chain in the East Midlands before leaving for a new life in Greece. Precisely what happened to Connie abroad is a mystery, but it is clear that it hasn't softened her abrasive personality and rampant need to succeed. Indeed, as Connie renews acquaintance with her calculating stepsister, Nesta (Pam Ferris), and her long-suffering ex-husband, Arnie (George Costigan), she seems even more determined to dominate her friends and competitors than before. Written by Ron Hutchinson as an aside on the hard-nosed values propagated by Margaret Thatcher and her peers, the show was particularly notable for Beacham's portrayal of Connie, which helped propel her towards a successful soap career in America.
