The first mainstream (as opposed to independent) effort from horror director, Wes Craven. Jim Schmidt (Douglas Barr), a former member of the Hittites - a religious community who reject all ways of modern life - has married an outsider and left the community. He is murdered when someone starts his tractor and runs him over. His grieving widow, Martha (Maren Jensen), hated by the Hittites for seducing one of their brethren, is joined by two old girlfriends from college who come to console her. It's not long before someone or something starts trying to kill them too.
