A stranger appears in a small town setting off a series of events which forces a woman to confront a deadly past she thought she had buried. Title previously released as The Burning Plain.

Guillermo Arriaga writes and directs this multi-narrative drama starring Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger. Sylvia (Theron) is the icily professional manager of an upmarket restaurant who spends her spare time having meaningless sex with different men. Gina (Basinger) is a married housewife and mother of four who begins an affair with Nick (Joaquim de Almeida), a Mexican-American man who is also married with a family. Maria (Jennifer Lawrence) is a teenager searching for the mother who abandoned her when she was two days old. The various strands and connections between the characters are gradually revealed throughout the film in Arriaga's signature style, previously seen in his collaborations with director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu: 'Amores Perros', '21 Grams' and 'Babel'.
