Geoffrey Rush and Donald Sutherland star in this romantic mystery directed by Italian film-maker Giuseppe Tornatore. Lonely, isolated germophobe Virgil Oldman (Rush) is the head auctioneer at a prestigious Italian auction house. When he is employed by Claire Ibbetson (Sylvia Hoeks), the daughter of a recently-deceased wealthy couple, to value the artwork left to her, Virgil grows impatient with the young woman who refuses to leave her room at the house and meet with him in person. On hand to help Virgil deal with the enigmatic Miss Ibbetson is his young friend and antique machinery buff Robert (Jim Sturgess), who gives some advice on how best to communicate with the young woman. Meanwhile, Billy Whistler (Sutherland), another of Virgil's friends is embroiled in a seemingly shady art deal.
