It is 1950s Nevada and Professor Vivian Bell arrives to get a divorce. She's unsatisfied with her marriage and feels out of place at the ranch she stays on she finds herself increasingly drawn to Cay Rivers an open and self-assured lesbian and the ranch owner's daughter. The emotions released by their developing intimacy and Vivian's insecurities about her feelings towards Cay are played out against a backdrop of rocky landscapes and country and western songs.Adapted from the novel 'Desert of the Heart' by Jane Rule.

Debut feature for writer-director Donna Deitch, set in Reno, Nevada in 1959. Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) is a New York Professor staying in Reno whilst she obtains a divorce. She is lodging in a ranch, owned by Frances Parker (Audra Lindley). Also living there is Cay Rivvers (Patricia Charbonneau), a fiery young employee at a local casino. Rivvers befriends Bell, and their relationship evolves into a tender romance.
