  • Dexter - Season 3
    David Bedwell

"A show about a serial killer that you will sympathise with" is about as succint a summary you could give to 'Dexter'. It doesn't sound very believable, but it's genuinely the truth. Of course, by Season 3 you should really be familiar with the basis for this popular show, and hooked already. Part dark comedy, mixed with mystery and crime drama, 'Dexter' doesn't pull any punches.

After one of the most gripping season finales, in which Doakes (Erik King) came so close to exposing Dexter (Michael C. Hall) but ended up losing his life, you realise just how high the stakes are for our favourite serial killer. Not only did he nearly lose his career, but his girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz) and makeshift family too.

Season 3 shows how Dexter copes with coming so close to having nothing. His inner turmoil caused by the daily fight to balance his urges with normal life makes for a fascinating show, forcing the viewers to look at murder in a very different way. Dexter has to hide his actions from all at the Miami Police Department, including his adoptive sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) who is a detective there, and always a few steps away from uncovering her brother's terrible secret. And Season 3 brings a twist on the 'too close to home' working relationship - Oscar Prado (the ever-watchable Jimmy Smits) who is an assistant district attorney with his own unusual way of cleaning up messes. This somewhat comfortable yet unsettling 'friendship' unravels throughout the season with catastrophic consequences for those involved.

Dexter's dead father Harry (James Remar) still appears from time to time, ever the doubting voice on Dexter's shoulder, and the only person he can truly rely on - or so he thinks. It's never healthy to act on the voice of someone who isn't really there, but who else can a serial killer talk to? Dexter forces himself to develop his relationship with Rita, yet we all know that can only go so far. He is a man alone, no matter how many people he surrounds himself with.

'Dexter' has a stellar supporting cast, from guest stars to recurring characters, such as Desmond Harrington as the new detective Joey Quinn, Lauren Velez as Lt LaGuerta, David Zayas as Sgt Batista, and the cringeworthy Masuka played by C.S. Lee. Without these characters to flesh out the world of 'Dexter' we may not be able to relate quite as much. It's not something many of us are familiar with, so to have it grounded in reality helps us to feel what the writers want us to feel - sympathy and empathy at the same time as being really quite disgusted. It takes a lot of talent to create a serial killer who the audience aren't scared of, but rather want to be happy.

For its unique premise and spot-on casting, 'Dexter' has to be one of the must-watch shows right now. Year on year, it builds on the foundations and creates even more twists and turns, and Season 4 is even better so get watching this and move on! You wouldn't want to upset him would you ..

After playing a mild-mannered funeral home director in SIX FEET UNDER Michael C Hall makes a smooth transition to a serial killer in this original series But the twist in this smart show is that Dexter chooses to prey only on other serial killers As a child Dexter was adopted by a cop (James Remar) who quickly realises that his new son is no ordinary boy Since Dexter is compelled to kill his law-abiding father pushes him to choose his quarry in a way that will best benefit society As Dexter grows older he works as a forensic blood-splatter expert in Miami giving him a close view of other murderers and their handiwork Stylish and blackly comic this drama is adapted from Jeff Lindsay's novel DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER This collection presents the complete third series

All 12 episodes from the third season of the American drama series starring Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, a jovial Miami police forensics expert who moonlights as an avenging serial killer.
