The Doctor (Tom Baker) and Leela investigate a series of deaths in the English countryside, and trace them to an evil influence being exerted by an eight million year old skull. The age of the skull means that dates from a time before the dawn of man. The Doctor has to prevent the manifestation of an ancient evil, the Fendahl.
