Although the star of ER has dimmed since the first three exceptional seasons it still remains an entertaining and often emotional programme with the occasional shock along the way. Season eleven is underrated in terms of quality but has the misfortune of coming after a lacklustre season ten. The first episode picks up after the previous season's cliff-hanger of Jing-Mei and Pratt involved a car chase and being threatened with a gun. As the season progresses various characters depart, some return and new ones arrive. Neela wonders whether she"s really cut out to be a doctor, Carter mourns the loss of his son and misses Kem, Weaver finally meets with her biological mother, Sam is still harassed by her ex-boyfriend, Ray has to decide between his band and his job and Abby suffers a terrifying ordeal at the hands of a child with a gun. The stand out episode of this season has to be Ray Liotta"s Emmy-winning performance as a dying alcoholic which will reduce you to tears. When I first watched this season on television I was underwhelmed by it as a whole and so resisted buying the DVD. When I finally got around to it I found it not as poor as I had remembered. The episodes maintain a good standard of entertainment, whereas earlier seasons fluctuated between very good and mediocre episodes, each episode in this season is consistently entertaining if not as groundbreaking. There are still big stunts, characters to love and controversies to deal with - in short this is still ER. This DVD boxset has very few extras, just containing some deleted scenes. As with the other seasons the DVDs are duel-layered which I personally find hard to handle and maintain perfectly. The picture and sound quality is good though. Overall this DVD boxset is an enjoyable and strangely comforting watch.
