Asking for his protection, they tell him he must recite a magical passage in one of the books to prevent their disappearance and the stories being lost forever. Learning that his parents wish to sell off the library to unscrupulous local dealer Mr Pickall, Nathaniel soon finds himself magically transported into the characters' realm, where he must brave many dangers to save his new found friends.
