War drama set in Russia in 1941 as the Nazis begin their attempted invasion into a country already reeling from the violence of Stalin's purges. A sequel to director and star Nikita Mikhalkov's critically-acclaimed 1994 film 'Burnt By the Sun', the movie picks up the story of lead character General Kotov (Mikhalkov) in the gulag to which Stalin has condemned him. With his life spared by the Nazi invasion, Kotov finds himself fighting in the front lines amongst his brave but disorganised countrymen. Haunted by dreams of his daughter Nadia (Nadezhda Mikhalkova), who he hasn't seen since his internment in the gulag, Kotov must somehow negotiate his way through the madness of the war and the turmoil of Stalinist Russia and make his way back to his family.
