Many famous Express trains ran on The Southern Railway from the Golden Arrow to the Atlantic Coast Express and the Bournemouth Belle. The locomotives that hauled them had an equally great reputation and for many people they will always be associated with their holidays. Among the best known were the Pacifics of the Merchant Navy Class followed by a smaller model in the West Country class designed by Oliver Bulleid and always controversial as they embodied many novel features not least of which was the slab-side air-smoothed casing. The names of the engines gave them... a romantic air - many bore names associated with history and the West Country and included a Knight of the Round Table the Sir Lamiel. Many Southern Express locomotives still run today on both British Rail and preserved lines and are featured in this programme together with rare archive footage of their past glory days. [show more]
