Keeping consistent with his unearthly sense of the cerebral and horizontal, Funki Porcini's fourth long player for Ninja Tune, Fast Asleep, subscribes once again to a world governed by lazy atmospherics, sleazy beats, and jazz-soaked instrumentation. Always less immediate than his "chill out" peers, Porcini melds the electronic and organic divide, with enough soundscaped subtleties to draw the listener in. The Ninja hallmarked sound bites also remain, often contorted, but with tongue always firmly in cheek, helping to segue tracks together in order to create an appropriately... flowing, restful experience, that thankfully never gets too contrived. Opening with wide screen effect it takes its time in gathering momentum, before the loose driving drums of "The Big Sea" are introduced, principally the most up tempo part of the album, consequently allowing a world of warm ambience to take place that governs itself on average at a reassuring headnodding hip-hop tempo. Always a swirling world of Leftfield ambience "Fast Asleep" may assist in matters of insomnia but is guaranteed not to cause involuntary narcolepsy unlike many of the afore mentioned "new wave" of chill out producers. A sterling release. --Found Sounds [show more]
