Flowers is a wonderful black comedy starring Olivia Coleman and Julian Barratt. Written and directed by Will Sharpe, who also plays the character Shun, Flowers explores mental health in an otherwise average family. The story swings between comedy and genuine sadness, yet manages to convey the difficulties of mental illness is a sensitive way.
In the first series of flowers, Maurice is deeply depressed, attempts suicide and is unable to talk to his family about it. His wife, Deborah, played by Olivia Colman makes a farcical attempt at an open marriage. Their grown-up... children, Amy and Donald, strugle to leave their childhood. Donald, desperate for a girlfriend, believes he is an inventor but his ideas are hopeless and his social ineptitude ensures he remains single. Amy, an artist, has her own problems and together, along with their live-in Japanese illustrator Shun (played by Will Sharpe), flowers explores how this dysfunctional family cope as they lurch from crisis to crisis.
