Jeremy Podeswa directs this adaptation of the novel by Anne Michaels, starring Stephen Dillane as Jakob Beer, who is orphaned as a young boy (Robbie Kay) in Poland during World War II before being saved by Greek archaeologist Athos (Rade Sherbedgia) and taken to live on a Greek island for the duration of the war. After the war, Athos takes Jakob to start a new life in Canada, where he grows up, becomes a writer and marries the vibrant Alex (Rosamund Pike). But Jakob's memories of the holocaust continue to consume him until he realises that he cannot move on with his life without facing up to the demons of his past.
