In 1968 Best was also named 'Footballer of the Year' by the Football Writer's Association's the youngest player to do so at the age of 21 as well as European Footballer of the Year. Ultimately it was his 'celebrity lifestyle' that started a steady decline in his career his extravagant lifestyle leading to problems with alcoholism and his demise in 2005. In this definitive and in depth programme George's father Dickie Best tells his son's story charting his journey from sporting hero to alcoholic. Over the course of his career he scored 115 goals for Manchester United was instrumental in helping the club win their first European Cup played for Northern Ireland 37 times and earned the admiration of players the world over. On august 8th 1988 a Testimonial Match was held in Best's honour at Windsor Park Belfast. Gathered there was a collection of some of the sport's greatest players from all over the world such as; Ossie Ardiles Rudi Krol Pat Jennings Liam Brady Paul Breitner Emlyn Hughes Johan Neeskens and Trevor Francis. The game was both exciting and rammed full of goals. An entertaining football event and a fitting and emotional farewell to one of the sport's most inspirational players. George Best - Best Intentions: George Best was the most naturally gifted British footballer of modern times. From his first days in England it was evident that the shy homesick Irish boy was special. The talent he paraded with his football wizardry assured George of rapid promotion to Manchester United's first team. He remained there for that vintage sides most dazzling years; an era that effectively ended in 1968 with European Cup triumph in which he played an inspirational part. George Best the footballer was practically flawless. He had the assets to be outstanding in any position. And aside from his legendary skill and speed George was also deceptively tough could tackle like a full-back and launch sinuous sorties with which he destroyed defences single handedly. Yet in the end he was unable to handle the goldfish bowl existence and fame which was thrust upon him. Bests View: Featuring the last interview George Best ever did before his untimely death. George Talks frankly about his life his loves and his fondest memories of the game in a heartfelt and honest way. George is co interviewed with Rodney Marsh. [show more]
