Encourage by Japan's entry into the war Hitler's hopes lay in a speedy spring offensive but weakened elsewhere by the disastrous Battle of the Atlantic defeats in North Africa the British bombing offensive and certain war with the U.S. his 6th Army was crushed and forced to retreat. Hitler bows to the need to re-arm and in 1943 German teeth are clenched as the struggle begins to re-establish supremacy. By 1944 much ground is lost and the fight is against time as Hitler faces losing the Ukraine. Not even the last desperate deployment of the terrifying flying bombs can turn the tide. Disc 4 - Hitler's Elite Fighting Force: The SS had its beginnings in the Weimar Republic. It became Himmler's personal powerbase and under him they grew into a private army and state-within-the-state. It was a chaotic corrupt and often grossly inefficient organisation. In many of the triumphs of German arms they played a conspicuous role one far disproportionate to their numbers. In the long period of decline and retreat as the Germans were steadily pushed back from east to west their discipline remained unbroken. After the war the Waffen-SS were burned with the near exclusive blame for the most hideous crimes of the Nazi regime. Disc 5 - Great German Battleships Of WWII: This fascinating DVD using archive footage stills and interviews with German ex-Naval officers and seamen concentrates on the exploits of the famous Bismarck. This is followed by an in-depth portrait of the mightiest and most famous German warships of World War Two including the big sea battles they encountered.
