For those who want a film that does more than assault the senses, one of the best offerings of the year comes from Director Ben Affleck (yes, you did read that right) and starring little Affleck brother Casey. At the heart of this gritty Boston-set movie lies a dilemma as taut as any Greek tragedy. Private 'dick' Pat Kenzie (Affleck) takes on the case of the sad parents of a missing 3 year old, in a case with echoes of the Maddie McCann incident. His girlfriend Angie (Michelle Monaghan) has misgivings about getting involved, and with good reason. But the dilemma is that when Kenzie does 'the wrong thing' he is praised by those around him; how then will he react when faced with doing 'the right thing' knowing, as he does, that it will cost him all he holds dear? Oldr Affleck does a great job of evoking the seediness and sadnesss of America's poorer white districts and the lives people lead in them. And any film with Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris in important roles has a heck of lot going for it. The result isn't an easy to watch movie, but is a thought provoking and tense thriller that will satnd as a real 'mark maker' for both Mrs Affleck's boys.

Excellent, thought provoking contemporary film noir from actor-turned-director Ben Affleck; 'Gone Baby Gone' is a gritty, neo-realist drama focused on the desperate search for a missing 3-year-old girl, and how all involved cope with its aftermath. Affleck's adaptation of Dennis Lahane's crime novella was put on hold due to coincidental similarities with the Madeline McCann case, and there are times when it feels as if you're watching the news. Set in an impoverished Boston suburb; inexperienced young detectives Casey Affleck & Michelle Monahan are hired to work their neighbourhood for clues, paired with cynical cops John Aston & Ed Harris in a high profile investigation commandeered by Massachusetts police captain; Morgan Freeman. Casey Affleck builds upon memorable performances in 'Ocean's 13', 'Lonesome Jim' and 'The Assassination Of Jesse James...' by creating a wet-behind-the-ears everyman whose street smarts serve him well, as he shuffles through the dodgy deck of lowlifes and degenerates who inhabit Boston's criminal underworld. An intense, well paced picture with faultless acting from an exceptional ensemble cast, (though Ed Harris steals a few scenes as only he can) 'Gone Baby Gone' proves beyond any reasonable doubt that the elder Affleck sibling is as capable a director as he is an actor; with an eye for a world rarely depicted onscreen, an ear for colloquial Boston dialect/ slang (some of which is inevitably misunderstood) and a direct, though not exploitative, approach to the subject matter. Similar in direction to Clint Eastwood's 'Mystic River' with thematic nods to 'Man On Fire' and 'Ransom', 'Gone Baby Gone' is a relatively downbeat, well paced, brutal and commendably complex film with a twist ridden, morally ambiguous ending that's sure to provoke some debate. A must see.
