Till death do us part. Fatih Akin's tough but ultimately touching story of two young second generation Turks in Germany whose seemingly desperate lives are forever changed when they meet in a hospital ward and as total strangers decide to get married... Winner of the top Berlin Film festival award The Golden Bear; in addition to Best European Film and Best European Director at the European Film Awards 2004
For me, Fatih Akin's 'Head On' was a film that seemed to come out of nowhere, an adrenaline blast giving voice to a new immigrant generation. The film focuses on two Turks living in Hamburg, Germany: Cahit, a near middle-aged alcoholic chain smoking punk fan, a widower who has abandoned his Turkish roots, and Sibel, a beautiful twenty something desperate to escape the strictures of her traditional Turkish family. They meet after mutual suicide attempts. A sham marriage ensues, on the grounds that Cahit is eligible due to his race. And, of course, the two eventually fall in love. To say more would be to spoil it.
'Head On' feels utterly modern and totally relevant, focusing on a new Muslim diaspora and how they cope living in Western Europe, with the inevitable cultural confusion that follows. Seething with punk energy, visceral shocks and genuine romance, I cannot recommend it enough. The soundtrack is ace too...

Off-beat German drama, set amongst the immigrant Turkish community. Cahit (Birol Ünel) is a from a second-generation Turkish family and is living a dead-end alcoholic life in Germany with no prospects and no future. Suicidal after a severe road accident has left him in a neck brace, Cahit is surprised to find himself entering into a relationship with the equally suicidal Sibel (Sibel Kekilli), a woman from the Turkish community who is desperate to leave her strict family. Deciding to get married for convenience, Cahit and Sibel live relatively separate lives while Cahit pursues his own interests of drinking and fighting, until an unexpected trip to Istanbul reveals to them what they each have to offer the other.
