The spiritual culture of Russia is reflected in the beauty of churches and monasteries in the paintings and frescoes that adorn them and - above all - in the sacred music that is sung in them. During the Soviet years religious belief and practice was discouraged and hundreds of places of worship were destroyed or allowed to fall into disrepair although some of the finest cathedrals and monasteries were maintained as museums.
