Irish comedy drama based on a short story by Maeve Binchy. Hayley Atwell stars as Ellie, a young woman who ends up in charge of a residential home for the elderly over the Christmas period. Most of the residents have left to spend the festive season with their families, but four grumpy residents known as the 'hardcore' remain at the home: retired actress Georgia (Vanessa Redgrave), spinster sisters Hazel and Heather (Imelda Staunton and Brenda Fricker) and reformed alcoholic High Court judge Donald (Joss Ackland). The young and inexperienced Ellie soon finds herself head-to-head with the cantankerous foursome, whose behaviour is so appalling that the home faces possible closure as potential new residents are driven away by their antics.
