Someone told me they found "I Love You Phillip Morris" one of the most offensive films they'd ever seen. In fact, they left the cinema within half an hour, the cinema to which they'd paid good money and perused mountains of extortionate pick 'n' mix in order to see it. The thing that puzzled me most about this was that the film was based on true events! Not to say that some of the content isn't (hilariously) crude or vastly derogatory to the gay community, so people with sensetive ears or those amongst us who are a little more naive (ok, now I'm just being mean) might in fact just find the urge to storm out of Cineworld, pick 'n' mix clasped firmly in hand. But the very picture this film paints of the homosexual community is, in the most part, a true one. It's flamboyant, it's colourful, relentlessly promiscuous and fully willing to make fun of itself... so laugh along yeah?!

I honestly thought it was brilliant, such a remarkable and hilarious story, and great to see Jim Carrey back on form. Ewan McGregor takes on the fairly tough role of Phillip Morris, but pulls it off without a hitch and the pair of them even lock lips for a considerable time, which is pretty bizarre to see actually, but all credit to them. It was a joy to watch, and not only genuinely funny but honestly very (and quite surprisingly) emotional. An all-round thumbs up.

Ps. if you think you might actually be offended by the sight of Jim Carrey mincing around in leather hot pants, camper than a row of pink tents, this might not be the film for you.

Romantic comedy starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Steven Russell (Carrey) is a happily married police officer, churchgoer and upstanding citizen of his local community. One day, a car accident dramatically snaps him out of this average existence. Steven realises that he is gay and embarks on a flamboyant and extravagant new lifestyle. Drawing on his knowledge of crime from his days in the police force, he turns to conmanship to pay for his luxurious new life, and eventually finds himself in prison for fraud. There he falls in love with the sweet-natured and sensitive Phillip Morris (McGregor), and channels his powers of ingenuity and daredevilry into his plan to escape jail and build the perfect life with Phillip.

I Love You Phillip Morris is the improbable but true story of a spectacularly charismatic conman's journey from small-town businessman to flamboyant white-collar criminal, who repeatedly finds himself in trouble with the law and on the lam, brilliantly escaping from the Texas prison system on four separate occasions - all in the name of love. Told with an uncanny sense of humour and a lot of heart, I Love You Phillip Morris is an oddball tale of what can happen when the legal system, a daredevil spirit and undying love collide. The film is co-written and co-directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa ( who wrote "Bad Santa") and stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor Actors Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, Nicholas Alexander, Michael Beasley, Tony Bentley, Allen Boudreaux & Sean Boyd Director Glenn Ficarra & John Requa Certificate 15 years and over Year 2010 Screen Widescreen Languages English - Dolby Digital (5.1) Duration 1 hour and 37 minutes (approx) Region Region 2 - Will only play on European Region 2 or multi-region DVD players.
