An orphan from the tough streets of Cleveland, Irish Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) rises from working longshoreman to union leader and mob ally. Forced out of the union by the feds, Danny starts anew as an enforcer for loan shark Shondor Birns (Christopher Walken), while still maintaining influence with mafia boss John Nardi (Vincent D'Onofrio). With Detective Joe Manditski (Val Kilmer) in pursuit, Danny rapidly acquires his own power and places himself at odds with the Italians, who find him to be a very difficult man to kill. What follows is a bloody war that breaks... out on the streets of Cleveland and gives it the name Bomb City, U.S.A. Based on a true story, Kill The Irishman is the saga of one man who embodies the Irish warrior mentality with a mixture of pride, brutality, ambition and principle, as he became a central figure in the '70s mob war that forever changed organized crime in America. Dramatisation of the life of Danny Greene, an Irish American gangster who gained immense criminal power in 1970s Cleveland. After a tough childhood as an orphan Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) works hard as a longshoreman and union rep, but his mafia connections finally see him forced out of both roles. Turning fully to a criminal life he begins employment for the loan shark, Shondor (Christopher Walken). Greene, however, is too ruthless and ambitious to take orders from an unpleasant character like Shondor for long. After he, in turn, uses and betrays Shondor and Italian mafia boss John Nardi (Vincent D'Onofrio), Greene ends up as one of the main players in the 1970s turf struggles which see Cleveland dubbed 'Bomb City'. With Detective Joe Manditski (Val Kilmer) on his trail and his enemies determined to assassinate him, how long can Greene maintain his pre-eminence in the city?

Over the summer of 1976, thirty-six bombs were detonated in the heart of Cleveland as a turf war raged between Irish mobster Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) and the Italian mafia. After turning the tables on loan shark Shondor Birns (Christopher Walken) and joining forces with gangster John Nardi (Vincent D'Onofrio), Greene cuts his ties to the Mafia, and begins moving in on their turf. Surviving countless assassination attempts and killing off anyone who goes after him, Danny Greene's infamous invincibility and notorious fearlessness eventually led to the collapse of mafia syndicates across the U.S. and also earned him the status of the man the mob couldn't kill.
