Now well established as a series in its own right after the sad death of John Thaw (in 2002) who played Inspector Morse, Lewis continues to bring us a cornucopia of murder mystery and suspense. Kevin Whately is the insightful Detective Inspector Robbie Lewis and along with his assistant D.S Hathaway (Laurence Fox) he solves countless intriguingly complicated crimes and murders throughout his Oxfordshire patch.
"The Mind has Mountains" involves the death of a University student who had been undertaking a rather dubious Clinical Trials program for a new anti-depressant... medication. Lewis and sidekick have to tease out the facts from the convoluted web of lies and deceit fed to them by the Professor of Psychiatry, his researchers and their families, many of them possessing mental health problems themselves. Murder or suicide - that is the question?
"Wild Justice" begins with the death of a visiting female Bishop at the ancient college of St Gerard's and, soon after, the murders of candidates standing for election to the post of Vice Regent. Lewis and Hathaway set about to uncover the dark truth behind the deaths which were perpetrated by a murderer obsessed with Jacobean Revenge Tragedy.
"The Gift of Promise". When high flying local business woman Andrea de Ritter is found murdered, the initial and most obvious motive is blackmail. Following the death of Andrea's lover, Lewis and Co delve a little deeper to find she may have had access to information about a government cover-up. The inimitable duo find themselves having to take on their rather frosty counterparts in the British Secret Service to get to the bottom of the case.
"Old Unhappy, Far-off Things" After an Alumni gathering at a Ladies-only college, the participants bursting with malicious spite and intimidation, a body is subsequently discovered by a waitress. The case is reminiscent of one of Lewis's old cases from years before. As bodies begin to accumulate at an alarming rate, Lewis and Hathaway have to race against time to try to identify guests from a Fancy Dress ball that took place nearly ten years previously.
If you enjoy a good murder story then look no further. With an interview with Kevin Whately as an extra, this DVD Box set is certainly good value for money.

Kevin Whately returns in the title role for the fifth series of ITV's 'Morse' spin-off crime drama.
