Sequel to 'Room at the Top' (1959), following a northern man who heads to London in search of a change in fortune. Joe Lampton (Laurence Harvey) thinks he has it made. He has married his boss's daughter, Susan (Jean Simmons), and looks forward to a settled life of advancement within the company and home comfort. So satisfied is Joe that he has little trouble turning down the offer of a job in London and the advances of seductive TV presenter Norah (Honor Blackman). However, when he discovers that his father-in-law is blocking his advancement within the company and that Susan is having an affair, Joe sets off to London for a new life with Norah. But will he be able to survive and succeed out of his comfort zone?
