The film is set in the midst of the American Civil War during Abraham Lincoln's rather turbulent second term in office. It focuses on his dynamic, moralistic crusade during early 1865 to obtain passage for the 13th Amendment, putting an end to slavery for good. The concern that the expected imminent end of the Civil War may trigger the re-enslavement of slaves that had already been freed produces a sense of urgency. Lincoln feels it is imperative to get the amendment passed by the end of January to avoid any risk of this happening. He therefore embarks on his determined... course of political action to try to end the war, abolish slavery and unite the country.
Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln himself provides a strong central performance for which he received several Best Actor award nominations; winning a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a BAFTA. This fascinating tale was directed, somewhat uncharacteristically reservedly, by Steven Spielberg resulting in an extraordinarily powerful snapshot of the era which encompasses this great event in American history.
The cast list also includes Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Strathairn and Tommy Lee Jones.
