Yoji Yamada directs this Japanese period drama, which focuses on the relationship between young samurai Shinnojo (Takuya Kimura) and his wife Kayo (Rei Dan). When Shinnojo goes blind after eating some tainted sashimi while working as a food taster for a feudal lord, Kayo makes the ultimate sacrifice in order to assure that her husband will receive the support he needs. When he finds out that Kayo has been dishonoured by high-ranking samurai Toya Shimada (Mitsugoro Bando), Shinnojo undertakes to renew his swordsman skills despite his blindness, and avenge the wrongs inflicted on his loyal and devoted wife.
